With the cooling of the weather in winter, our skin experiences moisture loss, and our skin needs extra care in this process. Our Hospital Skin and Venereal Diseases (Dermatology) Specialist Dr. Burcu Minareci made suggestions so that our skin does not lose moisture in winter and stay healthy.

How to increase the moisture value of dry skin in winter due to weather conditions?

As you know, our skin is a texture that is related to the external environment, so it is very affected by the changes in the external environment and climate. In the coming days, the weather will start to get colder. Both cold air and wind will cause a decrease in the moisture content of our skin. Therefore, we should take care to use moisturizer daily. Since sweating is more intense in summer, we prefer water-based moisturizers, while in winter, we should prefer intense moisturizers suitable for our skin that reduce moisture loss.

Do we need to use protective sunscreen in winter to protect our skin?

It is very important for our skin to protect from the sun. Because the sun’s rays damage and dry our skin over time, causing various sunspots and carcinogenic transformations. The ultraviolet rays of the sun that damage our skin are present in summer and winter. In other words, the harmful rays we are exposed to in the summer reach the world even when we do not see the sun in the winter or when the weather is cloudy. And it has the same accumulating and carcinogenic effect on our skin. For this reason, it is very important to protect from the sun also in winter. I recommend wearing sunscreen at least when leaving the house, even in cloudy sunless weather.

What are the care suggestions for dry skin and oily & combination skin?

Skin type features are important in product selection. While mostly oil-based moisturizers are recommended for dry skin, water-based or acne prevention products are recommended to reduce the risk of acne in oily and combination skin. My advice to people who care about their skin is to wash them with a cleansing product suitable for their skin, then use a suitable moisturizer and  sunscreen for summer and winter, and to choose an antiageing product suitable for their age at night. With this simple standard care, the skin stays both healthier and younger.

How can we make a fresh start to the new season and new weather conditions by purifying our skin from the effects of summer and the sun?

In summer, sun rays, salt water of the sea, chlorinated pool water may cause dryness, loss of elasticity, sunspot on our skin. This situation causes our skin to look dull, pale, lifeless and older. In addition, skin blemishes create light and dark brown areas on the face and cause aesthetical anxiety.

We can say that it is the skin renewal period since September. First of all, we should begin with drinking plenty of water, we should include more antioxidants (walnut, avocado, grapefruit, etc.) and green tea in our diet. We should use moisturizers, support the skin with creams containing A, E and C vitamins in the evening, and cleanse the upper dead tissue.

In addition, the best time to do mesotherapy where regenerating serums, hyaluronic acid and vitamins are applied to our faces with small injections is the autumn and winter months. Again, with the youth vaccine, intense moisture loss can be eliminated. With golden needle applications, elasticity, colour equalization, subcutaneous collagen formation can be restored.

What should be done to prevent rashes and windburn?

In the autumn and winter months, our skin is under the influence of different factors. Cold and windy weather can also harm the skin; this situation will be more disturbing especially in patients with a tendency to rosacea with more prominent superficial capillaries on the face. Again, drying, redness, cracking, thickening of the skin of the hands, that is, an eczematous appearance may occur in our body parts and hands that are in contact with cold and dry air. The most effective way to prevent this is to protect ourselves by wearing suitable clothing, e.g. gloves. In addition, we should use moisturizers containing dense oil and urea for our hands and body, and if we cannot prevent them with these, we can use cortisone creams recommended by our doctor.7

THE SEASONS MAY CHANGE BUT DO NOT LET THE BEAUTY OF YOUR SKIN CHANGE 🙂
